The 32-year-old son of Hollywood director Rob Reiner is being held in custody charged with murder after his parents were found stabbed to death at their Los Angeles home.

The Los Angeles Police Department said the Nick Reiner was taken into custody on Sunday night and booked for murder.

"It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner," the family said in a statement, asking for privacy.

Detectives are due to present their case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, which will decide whether to file formal charges.

Rob Reiner, 78, and his wife Michele Singer Reiner, 68, were found dead at their home in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon.

The Los Angeles Fire Department said firefighters responded to a medical aid call at the address shortly after 3.30pm and found a man and a woman dead at the scene.

Nick Reiner has previously spoken publicly about addiction and periods of homelessness. He co-wrote the semi-autobiographical film Being Charlie with his father, drawing on those experiences.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said the deaths were "a devastating loss for our city and our country," praising Rob Reiner's creative work and advocacy.

Rob Reiner won two Emmy Awards for his role as Mike "Meathead" Stivic in the US sitcom All in the Family, before moving behind the camera to direct films including This Is Spinal Tap, Stand By Me, When Harry Met Sally…, The Princess Bride, Misery and A Few Good Men.
