Pope Leo XIV has appointed Archbishop Jan Romeo Pawlowski as the new Apostolic Nuncio to the Catholic Church in Ireland, following the retirement of Archbishop Luis Mariano Montemayor in July.

Born in Poland in 1960, Archbishop Pawlowski was ordained a priest in 1985. He subsequently specialised in canon law, completing a PhD between 1991 and 2009.

His diplomatic ministry resulted in a number of Apostolic Nunciatures, including in the Central African Republic and Congo-Brazzaville, Thailand, Brazil and France.

In 2009, he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Gabon.

He later took on senior responsibilities within the Holy See's diplomatic service, serving as Delegate for the Pontifical Representations from 2015 and Secretary for the Pontifical Representations from 2020.

In 2022, he was appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Greece, continuing a career that has combined priestly ministry, expertise in canon law and extensive diplomatic service on behalf of the Holy See.

He is fluent in Italian, French, Russian, English, German and Portuguese.

President of the Irish Catholic Bishops' Conference and Primate of All Ireland, Archbishop Eamon Martin welcomed the news.

"I pray God’s blessings on Archbishop Pawlowski and look forward to meeting with him when he takes up his appointment in Ireland in the near future," he said.
