Heroic NYC delivery worker honored for helping catch Manhattan stabber — as he recounts lunatic’s chilling words

A courageous Bronx delivery man was given a heartfelt honor Wednesday for helping catch the hate-filled Manhattan stabber who screamed “Allahu Akbar” as he cut up two men in separate attacks on the Upper West Side in July – after coming face-to-face with the maniac. 

George Zamot, a longtime UPS employee said he was on his way to make a delivery when Raul Morales, 51, plunged a screwdriver into the chest of Moshe Grunhaus — a 50-year-old Jewish man wearing a kippah — after leaving a synagogue at Amsterdam Avenue and West 86th Street on July 23. 

Morales had already stabbed a 57-year-old Asian man in the back with a knife minutes earlier near West 84th Street and Central Park West.

“I looked and Moshe Grunhaus was grabbing on his chest,” Zamot, 49, told The Post in an exclusive interview.

“And he had asked someone to call 911 because ‘the gentleman in the black hoodie had just stabbed me.'”

The South Bronx native said he “instinctively” sprung into action and began following Morales after a shaken Grunhaus looked to him to “do something.”

Zamot trailed him at a distance for a good “two to three blocks,” he said, once Morales fled the scene. 

“I didn’t know what he was going to do at this point,” Zamont admitted. “I just knew he couldn’t do that again. I was ready to do whatever I had to do.” 

As Morales finally made his way into the NYCHA apartment building where he would eventually hole himself up, Zamot came face-to-face with him in the elevator — and the nutjob chillingly acted as if nothing had happened.

“After one individual got off on the third floor, he [Morales] got off on the eleventh. And as he leaves, he looks at me and he says, ‘Have a great day,’” recalled Zamot, who said all he could do was “look at him in total amazement.”

Zamot had the wherewithal to make note of Morales’ apartment number and alerted the NYPD – who, after a nearly hour-long standoff, were able to yank the lunatic out of the apartment and arrest him. 

Since his arrest, investigators uncovered evidence showing Morales holds antisemitic views, according to prosecutors. 

Meanwhile, the brave father of three said he’s been pretty low key about his role.

“My mother only found out today,” Zamot said Wednesday before speaking at the UJA-Federation of New York’s Rally to Stop Anti-Semitism in Midtown Manhattan.

When asked why he went to such lengths to help stop Morales, Zamot said: “One way or the other, he wasn’t gonna be able to do this to anybody else’s child. Because that’s how I see it.” 

He thought of Grunhaus’ mother, who he later found out is alive and lives in Israel. 

“There’s no way I was gonna let another mom just lose their child and live in agony for the rest of their lives,” Zamot said. 

At the rally, the good Samaritan urged New Yorkers to “be the thing that hate crimes cannot operate around.” 

His act of heroism was rewarded with heartfelt praise from his biggest admirer, Moshe Grunhaus, who thanked “my hero in brown uniform.” 

“New York City is a safer place because of you. New York City is a better place because of you,” Grunhaus said in a prerecorded message to a visibly emotional Zamot.

“The world is a better place because of you.”
