Galliano’s Met Gala exit: Letters to the Editor — Sept. 3, 2026

The Issue: John Galliano dropping out of the Met Gala following outcry over past antisemitic remarks.

Though she has taken her high place in fashion and New York society, Anna Wintour screwed up (“ ‘Wintour’ storm at hater,” Sept. 1).

The illogical idea to exhibit John Galliano’s fashion and art is an affront to everyone in the city. Although New York City has always been known for its tolerance, she has pushed it too far for any self-respecting human being to support her.

There are other places Galliano can go to be celebrated. With many of the Met’s patrons being Jewish, this gala should not be one of them.

Our education taught us the history of the Holocaust. Yet, the Metropolitan Museum of Art executives wanted to honor Galliano — a designer convicted of antisemitic hate speech in France — at their 2027 fundraiser gala.

Wintour and her minions must be awfully proud of their disgraceful descent, all in the name of keeping up with the Democratic Socialists. This has to stop.

Drunken words are sober thoughts, just as Galliano’s despicable outbursts were the result of his being an antisemite, not a drunk.

With today’s alarmingly rapid rise of antisemitism, Wintour’s lack of moral clarity in choosing to celebrate Galliano is unacceptable. Her continued support of him even after he’s canceled his exhibition makes her as hateful as he is.

The Devil wears stupid. At a time when antisemitism is seen as acceptable in political and public discourse, Anna Wintour’s choice to honor John Galliano was unacceptable. Bravo to City Council Speaker Julie Menin for stepping in.

It’s too soon to tell if time will judge Galliano as a great designer and if he will be forgiven. Time forgave Coco Chanel for being a Nazi collaborator.

Wintour’s frostiness was good humor in the novel and movies based on her career, but it turns out there’s nothing funny about it. The woman has no heart.

Yes, bad taste and hedonism play well in the tabloids, but scheduling a convicted antisemite as the Met Gala’s man of the year was a bridge too far.

Now that Galliano has withdrawn from the festivities — apparently not as a result of any action by the organizers but from outside pressure — the dust will settle and the party will go on, but it will never be the same. It has been literally undressed and with it, it’s callous leader.

The Issue: A woman shot dead by cops in Times Square after stabbing two people, one fatally.

The stabbing in Times Square is proof of a deeper problem within New York City (“Horror in Times Sq.,” Sept. 1).

The NYPD cannot be everywhere and furthermore it’s not equipped to solve the mental-health and homeless crises plaguing our city.

This might be a good time to restore the hundreds of inpatient psychiatric beds that were cut during former Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s term.

Unfortunately, community-based approaches to mental health don’t seem to work. Gov. Hochul and Mayor Mamdani need to act before more innocent people get hurt.

Maybe we need more signs in Times Square like the “Gun-Free Zone” signs Gov. Hochul had erected. We could put “Knife-Free Zone” signs right under them. That should work well, right? Wrong.

Until we get a handle on the mental-health crises in the state and country, all the signs in the world won’t do a thing.
