Winter solstice tarot spread: Here are horoscopes for every zodiac sign
· New York PostThe winter solstice and the longest night of the year are upon us.
This year, the winter solstice occurs on Sunday, December 21, 2025, at 10:03 A.M.
Solstice is a marriage of the Latin words for “sun” and “to stand still.”
During the winter solstice, the Sun will appear to stand still at the southernmost point of the equator.
From this point on, that showboating death star begins its journey north again. As we move deeper into this season, daylight will gradually increase as the sun pulls us towards spring.
In honor of this, the darkest of days, author and tarot reader Kerry Ward has prepared a tarot pull for each zodiac element using her “Light In The Dark Tarot & Oracle deck,” available here.

Fire signs – Aries, Leo, Sagittarius
Knight of Swords
Ward shared that for all signs, the solstice is a time of rebalancing, but for fire folks, the pull between polarities may feel more acute.
“The Knight of Swords pushes you to an emotional extreme this solstice, one that you may experience as either an extreme sensation of passivity OR of aggression. Neither is desirable,” Ward said.
She shared that these extremes are unfolding because fire signs are being called and, in some cases, even dragged to a new position that will require them to tap into graceful assertiveness.
“You need to discover where your assertive mood, voice, and expression live and how you share them with the world. Look for opportunities to practice. This is a valuable life skill, one that might well define your success in 2026. Winter is the time to discover it,” Ward told The Post.
Earth signs – Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn
Six of Wands
“As the wheel of the year turns to a new season, old grounds are furrowed, ploughed and stirred,” said Ward.
The notes that this turning over can release pent-up energy and/or reveal an opportunity that has remained unearthed (get it?) until now.
“Earth signs, these opportunities are meant for you! Notice everything unfurling, unfolding and changing in your realm, and don’t be tempted to see it as a problem or challenge, but as an opening or opportunity.
Be the first one to claim it, and the first to present a pitch or idea around it.
Ward reminds earth folk that the early bird gets the worm, and all of the worms are surfacing this solstice.
“YOU are the bird! This will herald the start of six very lucky weeks for you. Much can be sown and reaped. Get busy,” she said.
Air signs – Gemini, Libra, Aquarius
Five of Wands
Ward notes that air signs might be a little behind when it comes to scheming and dreaming this winter, but the delayed start is a matter of divine design.
“Don’t worry, there’s time yet. Maybe it was meant to start this way because it’s what’s in front of you right now that matters, and things have changed. Take the week to tune into where you feel discomfort, dissatisfaction, or a yearning to do better / be more,” Ward told The Post.
She shared that this dissatisfaction will deliver air folk into their sacred homework this season.
“Shadow work might be your assignment during the darker months, and it means you will emerge in Spring with your problems resolved or diminished, and your appetite for new opportunity set at ravenous.”
Water signs – Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces
The Devil
“The Devil visits you this Solstice with a compelling invitation to be whoever you truly are this winter,” shared Ward.
“What would you do in the shadows? As long as you own the consequences of your actions and pay the toll of pleasure or indulgence, you are free to pursue whatever passions are meaningful to you.”
She implores water signs to live free and true with a deep vow to experience the breadth of what it means to be alive.
“We are indebted to our ancestors to lead a full life. We are the spearhead of their bloodline and survival power. Make this Winter YOUR time to relish your life.”
