The best beach pictures as Wales enjoys more record-breaking heat
by Indigo Jones · Wales OnlinePeople across south Wales have flocked to their local beaches to cool off on what is officially the hottest May day on record. Some areas have reached peaks of 32.9°C, and what better way to enjoy the warm weather than heading to the seaside, buying an ice cream and complaining about the heat?
The heatwave kicked off on Friday, May 22, ahead of the bank holiday weekend, with reports that we would reach a peak on Monday with 32°C heat which would beat the original May record set back in 1944. After reaching record numbers on Monday, Tuesday, saw temperatures rise again, beating the record for a second day running.
As a result, there were reports of heavy traffic across Wales as people made the most of the half term heatwave.
The SPF was slathered, the sun hats were out, and bathers were dug out from the bottom of the drawers as everyone had the same idea - it was time to head to the beach. For the biggest stories in Wales first sign up to our daily newsletter here
Families flocked in their masses to Swansea's Langland Bay to sunbathe, eat a picnic on the sand and take a dip in the sea. Some even grabbed their bodyboards to make the most of the surprising May temperatures.
Meanwhile, in Port Talbot beachgoers queued up for ice cream at Remo's and on the beach front at Franco's for their chip shop fix. Children (and big kids) also utilised Aberavon's much-loved splash park to cool off in the warm weather.
Locals headed to Porthcawl's Town Beach and Coney Beach, lugging their camping chairs down to the sand to set up ready for the sweltering day ahead. Inevitably Scoops and Fablas ice cream parlours were heaving, and the chip shops weren't much different.
Below are some of the best pictures as thousands descended on Welsh beaches on another glorious sunny day.
