Liam Payne's funeral service takes place with One Direction bandmates expected to attend
by Ffion Lewis · Wales OnlineThe funeral of One Direction singer Liam Payne will be held today, with his former band mates expected to be among the guests attending. Liam died aged 31 on October 16 after falling from the third-floor balcony of a hotel in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires.
The funeral, being held in the Home Counties, England, will also be attended by his family and friends, with girlfriend Kate Cassidy also reported to be there. Fans from across the globe have continued to hold vigils in memory of Liam following his death however the funeral is reported to be private.
The singer died of multiple traumas and “internal and external haemorrhage”, a post-mortem examination report said. An investigation has been launched into his death by prosecutors, and three people have been charged in connection with the incident.
A toxicology report unveiled a class-A drugs in his system, leading to fresh claims about his final hours. Liam had been open about his struggles with drugs and alcohol in the past but had also enjoyed periods of sobriety. For the latest TV & Showbiz news, sign up to our newsletter
Liam rose to fame alongside Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Zayn Malik and Niall Horan when Simon Cowell put them together to form One Direction on ITV talent show The X Factor in 2010. Following the band's hiatus in 2015. Wolverhampton born Liam went on to launch a successful solo career, releasing his debut solo album LP1 in December 2019, which included the songs Polaroid and Strip That Down featuring Quavo.
He and Girls Aloud singer Cheryl, who were in a relationship between 2016 and 2018, share a son, Bear. It is expected that Cheryl will be in attendance at the funeral.
Zayn Malik decided to cancel his UK tour that was due to start this week so that he can attend the funeral, it has been reported by the Mirror. The former One Direction star announced to his fans last week that he was rescheduling two of his Edinburgh shows due to "unforeseen circumstances."
He informed fans that his November 20 show has now been changed to December 8 and another show of his Stairway To The Sky tour show on November 21, has been rescheduled to December 9. Zayn had previously postponed the American leg of his tour following the devastating loss of his former bandmate Liam.
In a joint statement last month, One Direction said: "We're completely devastated by the news of Liam's passing. In time, and when everyone is able to, there will be more to say. But for now, we will take some time to grieve and process the loss of our brother, who we loved dearly. The memories we shared with him will be treasured forever. For now, our thoughts are with his family, his friends, and the fans who loved him alongside us. We will miss him terribly. We love you Liam."
