Why college life at Gower College Swansea could be your best move
by Paul Atkins · Wales OnlineAs GCSE exams approach and school leavers begin weighing up their next steps, choosing the right college can feel like one of the biggest decisions they’ll make.
Beyond grades and league tables, many young people - and their parents - are asking a more personal question: where will I feel supported, inspired and at home?
Wales Online caught up with Principal Paul Kift to explore what sets the College apart and why so many students choose to study there...
More than qualifications
At Gower College Swansea, it is about more than just gaining qualifications - it is also about being somewhere students genuinely want to be.
Mr Kift explained: “We encourage our learners to think big and prepare for their next steps, whether that’s university, an apprenticeship or moving directly into employment.
“We want every learner to feel recognised and supported, not just another face in the crowd.
“We get to know our students as individuals, build their confidence and help them pursue the things they enjoy.”
The College is proud of its reputation for high-quality, award-winning teaching. Many staff hold Master’s degrees or PhDs and bring valuable hands-on industry experience into the classroom, ensuring learners are taught by knowledgeable specialists in their fields.
Mr Kift added: “But it’s not only about academic expertise. Our tutors don’t just teach a subject - they help students believe in what they’re capable of achieving.”
Success stories from former students
That support is reflected in the success of former students across a range of industries.
Alumni include actress Joanna Page, singer Katharine Jenkins OBE, Welsh rugby internationals Justin Tipuric and Leigh Halfpenny, chef Adam Bannister and restaurateur Jonathan Woolway, as well as Charlie Morgan, co-owner of AU Vodka, and Anne Boden, founder and former CEO of Starling Bank.
More recently, former Level 3 Performance and Production Arts student Lauren Evans won a BAFTA for casting on the critically acclaimed film drama, I Swear.
Choice and opportunity
For A Level students, choice is a big advantage. With more than 40 A Level subjects available, learners can create combinations that suit their interests and ambitions, rather than being limited to the traditional options often offered by school sixth forms.
The College also has a strong track record of supporting high achievers who progress to leading universities, ranking among the top 30 schools and colleges in the UK for progression to Oxford and Cambridge.
The GCS Honours Programme provides tailored guidance for students applying to competitive universities.
In 2026, 11 students have received offers from Oxford and Cambridge.
Support every step of the way
College can feel very different from school, which is why student support is a key priority.
Just like at school, there are regular progress evenings designed for parents to discuss their child’s progress. Parents can also access the College’s Engage app to view timetables, track progress, and raise any concerns.
Mr Kift said: “We have more than 80 dedicated student support staff to ensure learners are supported academically, personally and in terms of their wellbeing.”
All students have access to progress coaches, pastoral coaches and personal tutors who work closely with them throughout their time at the College.
Financial advice and support are also available, and staff are known for going the extra mile, often offering additional help outside lesson time to ensure students feel confident and on track.
Strong links with employers
Building strong relationships with employers and industry is central to the College’s approach.
Mr Kift said: “We work closely with businesses through employer advisory boards made up of industry leaders from key sectors.
“These partnerships help shape our courses, so they reflect the real needs of the workplace. By listening to employers and understanding the skills they are looking for, we ensure our learners are gaining relevant, up-to-date knowledge that prepares them for the future.”
The College also connects learners with employers, providing careers advice and guidance to help them make informed decisions about their future pathways.
Life beyond the classroom
College life extends far beyond lessons. Learners regularly take part in national and international skills competitions, pushing themselves to further develop their talents.
A wide range of enrichment opportunities is also available, including sports academies and volunteering projects.
One group of learners recently travelled to Kenya to support a primary school that the College has sponsored for more than 20 years.
A genuine student voice
Student voice also plays an important role at the College. It is the only college in Wales with a paid Student Union President, supported by a structured team of student officers representing their peers.
Mr Kift concluded: “This ensures learners have a meaningful say in college life and the decisions that shape their experience.”
