ITV presenter Stephen Mulhern rushed to hospital after collapsing at Pizza Express
by Zasha Whiteway-Wilkinson, Zita Whalley · Wales OnlineStephen Mulhern was hospitalised after a distressing incident where he collapsed at a Pizza Express, in full view of other diners. The TV favourite, known for his work on 'You Bet!', was enjoying a solitary meal with drinks at the Sunningdale branch of the chain in Berkshire, when he suddenly fell ill, spiralling into what is believed to be a reaction to previous anaesthetic used for a medical procedure that day.
Concern arose amongst the restaurant staff around 8pm on Wednesday, November 27, prompting the emergency services to be called.
The incident dealt an added blow to the popular entertainer, who has been dealing with heartfelt grief following the recent passing of his father. A source disclosed to The Sun: "Stephen has been going through an incredibly tough time of late. He is grieving the loss of his dad to whom he was so, so close. He's also been battling several well-documented health problems, and on Wednesday morning had a procedure requiring a local anaesthetic."
They continued, detailing the unfortunate event: "He took himself off for a quiet, solo dinner that evening, had a few drinks and just reacted incredibly badly. He's only human, and his dad's death has hit him hard."
It was recounted that Stephen promptly felt indisposed, leading to the intervention of Pizza Express employees who swiftly called for paramedical assistance: "Stephen immediately felt unwell and concerned staff came over, and called 999. Paramedics checked him over and took him to hospital as a precaution. He was also put on the phone to his mum to reassure her that he was OK."
The insider concluded by saying Stephen is currently recuperating at home, although he is reportedly feeling quite embarrassed about the incident at the restaurant, reports the Daily Star.
After the sad passing of his dear father last month, Stephen withdrew from commitments with Butlin's holiday parks. It is believed that he is receiving support from his team, including his friend and co-host on You Bet!, Holly Willoughby.
The popular TV personality, once the youngest member of the Magic Circle, credits his magic abilities to his father, who introduced him to tricks while working at his market stall.
