Street Food Circus brings fire, flavour and festival magic to Wales

by · Wales Online

Street Food Circus is rolling back into Wales with three showstopping events that turn extraordinary settings into playgrounds for food, play, and performance.

Established in 2015, the Cardiff-born collective turns castles, harbours and green spaces into places to meet, eat and unwind. The approach is simple: great independent traders, live kitchens you can see and smell, and experiences that feel shared - for all ages.

What began as a warehouse experiment and quickly won Best Street Food Event at the British Street Food Awards has grown into a roving platform for rising cooks and makers.

Ringmaster and impresario Matt The Hat said: "I’ve always believed the best way to understand a place is to eat it. Every trader is handpicked, every dish a headliner, every bite a full‑blown spectacle. Less fine dining. More fun dining.

“We’re here to turn spaces into places. Moments into memories. Strangers into neighbours. Follow the aromas, trust your cravings, and prepare for a mouthwatering performance you won’t forget."

Street Food Circus believes community is built by sharing space, food, and experiences, and everything it does is grounded in community, conversation, curiosity, ceremony, and connection.

It has three big events coming up this summer and autumn:

Fantastic Fete

St Donat’s Castle, Vale of Glamorgan, July 31 to August 9

Over two weekends, the fete brings together street food from across the world, performances, family entertainment, a lido by the sea, and after-dark DJ sets into a ‘remixed, 21st-century village fete’.

Bands lend a breezy soundtrack to the lawns, and local makers bring beautiful wares. Expect coconut‑shy chaos and curious competitions with an SFC twist, plus open play zones where kids can run, jump, and let off steam.

As night falls, the event switches into dancefloor mode for a great evening for all.

Harbour Festival

Saundersfoot Harbour, Pembrokeshire, September 4-6

This harbour‑side knees‑up salutes the legend of Barti‑Du with hearty grub, swashbuckling circus capers and rum raised high.

A global fleet of traders will serve dishes from across the world while circus pirates climb rigging, bubbles drift on the breeze, and music rolls across the water.

Laughter, clinking plates, and the odd sea shanty echo around the quay, and in the evening, DJs will take the stage for a more grown-up evening.

Mabon

Caldicot Castle, September 25-27

Hang Fire BBQ & Street Food Circus present a wild gathering where fire, folklore, and flavour take centre stage inside the storied walls of the castle. Mystical tales, hidden rituals and Mabon magic are woven through the weekend.

Marking the autumn equinox, it sees UK outdoor fire chefs converge on open hearths and iron grates to serve up small plates. Expect huge communal fire pits, live cookery demos, food talks, natural wines, music, and theatrical performances.

Or head to The Hang Fire Feast, a four‑course banquet under canvas: long tables, shared plates and tales told by firelight, with guest chefs joining the line‑up.

A series curated by Simon Wright of Wright’s Food Emporium explores everything from the healing power of food and fire to the state of school dinners in Wales.

And at the New Wave Producers Market, meet independent Welsh food and drink makers and take something delicious home.

Kid friendly

Families will find Little Kooks Clwb popping up at Street Food Circus events: a playful invitation for curious kids who love to eat, make, and explore.

Each child can get an Activity Backpack packed for the day's adventure. The fun continues at home with creative challenges and stories inspired by the Circus.

Children under 16 also go free to all circus events. For energetic adventurers, you are likely to find large-scale play attractions, including giant inflatables and bouncy castles, family-friendly shows and games that everyone can enjoy together, from bubble discos to novelty activities like crazy golf.

Matt added: "We believe in creating spaces that bring people together. Spaces filled with colour, flavour and curiosity. Spaces that celebrate global cuisines, independent traders, and the joy of sharing food with the people around you.

"We’re proud of what the Circus has become, and we’re only just getting started. Your parents told you not to play with your food. They were wrong!"
