Michael Sheen pays off hundreds of people's personal debts in an 'extraordinary gesture'

Port Talbot-born Hollywood actor Michael Sheen has reportedly paid off hundreds of people's personal debts. The Welsh actor, who recently starred as Prince Andrew in the Amazon Prime series A Very Royal Scandal, is now looking to contact those he has helped.

Outside of acting, Sheen is known to be involved in several charitable organisations, having been a UNICEF UK ambassador since 2014, selling his houses to ensure the 2019 Homeless World Cup went ahead in Cardiff and pledging £50,000 over five years to fund a bursary to help Welsh students go to Oxford University.

Now, production company Full Fat Television has confirmed that the actor has been campaigning for a fairer credit system for years. In an "extraordinary gesture", they added that the actor had used his own money to write off hundreds of people's personal debts.

In a Facebook post shared by Full Fat Television, they said: "Actor Michael Sheen has been campaigning for a fairer credit system for years and in an extraordinary gesture, he has used his own money to write off personal debts for hundreds of people in South Wales. If you have received a letter from a company called Ten Acquisitions the good news is that Michael has paid off some of your debt and he'd love to hear from you. The details of how to get in touch with him are in the letter."

The Hollywood star himself has not publicly announced the gesture, but many fans were quick to spot the posts on social media. In response to a fan on X, formerly known as Twitter, Sheen confirmed it was true. It comes after the actor appeared in Parliament on Monday, October 21, in which he joined calls for the UK Government to pass legislation to help tackle the crisis of unaffordable credit and problem debt in the UK. Speaking at an event in Parliament on Monday, the actor said: "Anyone can find themselves in a place where they need credit to make ends meet or to get through a difficult time. The lack of affordable credit for people on lower incomes is harming individuals and families, but also businesses and communities.

"Whole regions are seeing their growth held back. We can't keep waiting and hoping that things will get better. We need something to change now. The Fair Banking Act could be the thing which really makes the difference".
