Sefton Pride returned to Bootle today in a sea of rainbow colour. People gathered at Bootle town hall and marched to the Lock & Quay community pub and gardens for a day of live music, food, and dancing by the side of the canal.

The family-friendly celebration was the first in a series of events taking place in Sefton this month supporting the LGBTQ+ community. June marks the beginning of Pride Month, which commemorates the long fight for LGBTQ+ rights both in the UK and abroad, and celebrates the achievements of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

On June 24 at 7.30pm, there will be a special screening of the 2014 film Pride!, which tells the story of how lesbian and gay activists helped families affected by the British miners' strike in 1984.

On June 26 at 4.30pm, the Rainbow book club will meet at Crosby Library for a reading of Tim Tate's "Pride", the true story behind the film.

Finally on June 28, Southport Pride will take place, with an afternoon march from Victoria Park to Southport Market.

A Sefton Council spokesman said: "We are proud to stand with our LGBTQ+ communities this month and every month. Our commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion is at the heart of everything we do, and we want Sefton to be a place where everyone feels safe, respected and valued.

"In 2018 we were awarded the Navajo Charter Mark and we are proud to have kept it ever since."
