I'm a makeup artist: this is how to make your under eyes look smooth and wrinkle free

One of the most common struggles I see as a makeup artist, is products settling into fine lines and wrinkles, especially around the eye area. Many makeup wearers over the age of 40 want more coverage, but find this actually ends up accentuating lines and wrinkles even more.

The key, is to apply the right products and less of them - a delicate hand is also crucial. These few steps will be a game changer for your makeup routine and should ensure the perfect under eye application.

Step one: eye cream or serum

The skin around the eyes is the thinnest and most delicate area. This is why it tends to have the most fine lines and is the place most people struggle with when applying makeup.

By using an eye cream or serum first, you are putting moisture back into the skin, allowing products to blend better on top. Dry eyes means the fine lines and wrinkles look more pronounced.

If I'm using an eye cream, I make sure to really massage it in and let it sit for a few minutes so that it can absorb into the skin. If you don't have lots of time in the morning, an eye serum like the Charlotte Tilbury Cryo Eye Serum (currently on offer for £37.50 at Sephora) can be applied immediately before makeup as it's much thinner.

Step two: concealer

Make sure you choose a concealer that's hydrating, as thick and full coverage ones will simply exaggerate the texture. My absolute favourite is the Dior Backstage Face & Body Flash Perfector Concealer (currently on offer for £22 at Boots).

I only apply the concealer to the inner and darkest part of the under eye as well as the very outer corner which helps to lift the eye at the same time. Start with a few dots, and use your ring finger or a small brush to dab the product in, instead of swiping it in.

If you go in with lots of product at once it will settle into the lines and look too thick. So, start with less and simply built up in thin layers until you have reached your desired coverage.

Step three: powder

Many people think that at a certain age, you should avoid powder altogether. However, it is crucial for setting the concealer into place and preventing lines from appearing throughout the day.

Beauty Pie sells the Wonderfilter™ Magic Blurring Loose Powder for £35 which completely blurs the eye area. Simply tap a thin layer over the concealer using a small and compact brush. This powder should last you months and months as you only need a small amount.

Remember to use thin layers, and never swipe - only tap. If you are looking for some more mature skin makeup recommendations, you can read about the best products here.
