Zara Larsson, Louis Tomlinson and Lola Young will perform on the main stage at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend when it heads to Sunderland this year.

The pop stars have been announced for the second day of the festival, and join DJs Fatboy Slim and Sonny Fodera who will headline the dance-focused first day.

They'll be joined by Nothing But Thieves, Skye Newman and Ellie Goulding who have also been announced for the Saturday.

The annual music festival will take place in the city's Herrington Country Park from Friday 22 to Sunday 24 May.

Tickets for the first day went on sale last week, with local residents getting priority.

The headliners and line-up for Sunday will be announced on the Radio 1 Breakfast Show on Tuesday morning.

Tickets for both the Saturday and Sunday will go on sale at 17:00 GMT on Wednesday.

Swedish pop star Larsson emerged on to the music scene in the late noughties, but shot to fame in 2016 when her track Lush Life became one of the major soundtracks of the year.

She has continued to release a string of hit collaborations including Girls Like with Tinie Tempah and Symphony with Clean Bandit.

The singer returned to the airwaves earlier this year following the release of her high-energy track Midnight Sun and has been lighting up stages across the world with her vibrant looks on the accompany tour.

She will be following on from Friday's headliner Fatboy Slim who's become a staple on the UK music festival circuit, with setlists full of crowd-pleasing hits like Praise You and Right Here, Right Now.

The British DJ, whose real name is Norman Cook, rose to prominence when he released a string of club hits in the 1990s.

Radio 1 says it's Friday line-up will be the first time the festival will be using all of its stages to host a "huge dance party" on the first day.

Sunderland last hosted Radio 1's Big Weekend in May 2005, when the line-up included Gwen Stefani, Foo Fighters and the Black Eyed Peas.

Tens of thousands of fans are expected to attend this year's three-day event, which will feature about 100 acts.

For the Friday, there were 31,000 general admission tickets at £34.50 each up for grabs, and another 2,960 VIP tickets at £86.00 each.

General sale for Saturday and Sunday tickets will cost £44.50 per day, while VIP will cost £106.00.

Friday tickets and the VIP area are available for over 18-year-olds only, but those aged 15 and under will be able to attend over the weekend if they're with an adult.

Festival-goers can get up to two tickets per person per day, and may attend Friday and one weekend day only (Saturday or Sunday), but not both.

Radio 1 say this restriction is in place to allow as many people as possible have a chance to buy tickets.

Last year's Big Weekend in Liverpool was dubbed "Scouse Coachella"

Last year, about 100,000 music fans attended the event in Sefton Park in Liverpool, which was dubbed "Scouse Coachella".

Tom Grennan, Sam Fender and Mumford & Sons topped the bill, while Ed Sheeran made a surprise appearance and former Little Mix star JADE got teary on stage.

Big Weekend, BBC Radio 1's flagship event, is held in a new location each year - often in towns and cities which don't get many big live music events.

In previous years acts such as US pop star Taylor Swift came to Norwich and Swansea, grime star Stormzy performed in Exeter, pop rock band The 1975 lit up Dundee and US singer Bruno Mars took to the stage in Londonderry.
