Hyundai Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6 Songket Edition revealed

Hyundai-Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) has co-developed Songket Editions of the Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 EVs with Kraftangan Malaysia (Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation), an agency under the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, to celebrate 67 years of Malaysia’s independence.

For those not in the know, songket is a traditional fabric decoratively hand-weaved with an amount of real gold leaves and gold or silver threads, and is historically associated with peoples of high social standing such as royalty, nobles and aristocrats.

The vehicles feature a subtle songket motif on their bonnets, bootlids, sides and roofs, reflecting the traditional craftsmanship that’s been UNESCO-recognised for its cultural heritage. HSDM says the motif, called Tampuk Manggis, is inspired by the mangosteen fruit and is a primary choice in the patterns of songket weaving, besides being traditionally used in the art of songket textiles.

“This motif is created through a grid arrangement known as pixels, forming a smooth square shape that represents the evolution of design connecting generations towards the future. At the end of the motif’s petal, the grid lines represent six grid squares, symbolising beauty, uniqueness, stability, robustness, sophistication and strength,” HSDM managing director Joey Lin said in a LinkedIn post.

The Ioniq 6 Songket Edition was first revealed on HSDM’s Facebook page on Malaysia Day, while the Ioniq 5 Songket Edition served as an Official Car for the International Tourism and Cultures Exhibition & Conference (INTAC) 2024, held at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur last weekend.

The Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 are World EV of the Year, World Car Design of the Year and overall World Car of the Year winners for 2022 and 2023 respectively, while the Ioniq 5 N, which was previewed in Malaysia recently, is the 2024 World Performance Car of the Year.
