Mangaluru, May 7: The 6th District and Sessions Court in Mangaluru has rejected the anticipatory bail application filed by Mahesh Shetty Thimarodi in connection with a case involving alleged defamation and threats against Yakshagana artistes.

The order was passed by judge Rajesh Maruti Kamate during the hearing held on Thursday, May 7. The case had earlier been registered at the Puttur Rural police station based on complaints lodged by Leelavathi, mother of Yakshagana artiste Dinesh Kodapadavu, and Sundar Rai Mandara.

According to the complaint, the accused allegedly made derogatory remarks against Yakshagana artistes and issued threats, leading to the registration of the case on April 13, 2026.

During the hearing, government prosecutor Mohan Kumar B represented the state and strongly opposed the bail plea. It was argued before the court that the accused has a criminal background with several cases registered against him from 1992 till date. The prosecution also stated that courts generally do not grant bail in cases involving multiple criminal records.

Advocate Vijay Vasu Poojary appeared on behalf of Mahesh Shetty Thimarodi.

Meanwhile, another related hearing in the matter is scheduled to be held at the Puttur court on the May 8.
