Kildare artist to launch moving exhibition on addiction and recovery

A transformative art exhibition on addiction and recovery is due to open at Dunamaise Arts Centre, Portlaoise.

This unique and deeply moving exhibition, 12, will open on January 19. Curated by Athy native, David Delaney and Ciara Buckley from Sligo, they have created an experience that brings together art, storytelling, and lived journeys to explore themes of addiction and recovery.

At the heart of the exhibition are twelve chairs, each originating from Cuan Mhuire Treatment Centre in Athy, Ireland’s largest voluntary provider of addiction treatment services. These chairs, which have borne witness to countless personal journeys of struggle and healing, have now been transformed through creative intervention.

Individuals have worked on them, weaving art into the many stories likely already embedded in their worn surfaces. Each chair stands as a testament to resilience, hope, and the power of artistic expression in the recovery process.

Cuan Mhuire has been at the forefront of addiction recovery for over 50 years, providing residential treatment and support for those struggling with substance misuse. This exhibition offers a poignant reflection on the healing journey, inviting viewers to engage with the deeply personal yet universally relevant narratives woven into each piece.

Twelve large photography portraits and audio visual experiences also draw the visitor further into the interpretations of addiction and recovery. Through 12, the exhibition seeks to challenge stigma, foster conversation, and celebrate the strength of those on the path to recovery.
