'Kiki's Delivery Service' to be adapted as live-action series
by Annie Martin · UPIJune 16 (UPI) -- Kiki's Delivery Service will come to life once more as a live-action series.
Deadline reported Tuesday that BBC Studios will co-develop the first live-action TV adaptation of the Eiko Kadono children's fantasy book series with Wheel in Motion and Kadokawa Corporation.
Previously adapted as a beloved 1989 animated film from Studio Ghibli and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Kiki's Delivery Service follows Kiki, a young witch who moves to the port town of Koriko with her cat, Jiji.
Variety said Irena Brignull (The Boxtrolls, The Little Prince) will write the new series, which is expected to consist of 10 half-hour episodes.
The show is being developed in honor of the 40th anniversary of Kadono's book series.
"We are thrilled to be part of a collaboration to bring Kiki's Delivery Service to life for a new generation on a global stage," BBC Studios Kids & Family VP of development Grainne McNamara said.
"Bringing this beloved story to a new audience as a live-action series is a dream come true and an absolute honor," Wheel in Motion founder Alexi Wheeler added.
