I saw Here & Now The Steps Musical in Birmingham and was stunned when famous surprise guests appeared
by Megan Archer-Fox, https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/authors/megan-archer-fox/ · Birmingham LiveIt was a big night yesterday at The Alexandra, as the glittering world premiere of brand new show Here & Now The Steps Musical was hosted right here in our Birmingham. It's the latest theatre hit everyone is talking about.
It was the Gala evening, which made last night a particularly special occasion, with stars such as Strictly's Craig Revel Horwood and former Pop Idol judge Pete Waterman (also one of the show's producers) in attendance. But there was one particular group of A-Listers that stunned the entire audience when they arrived....
Here & Now is billed as a 'heart-warming' new musical based on the songs of pop phenomenon Steps. The world premiere was held right here at Birmingham's Alexandra Theatre prior to a West End run. A UK tour has also been announced for next year, with tickets now on sale from today.
Here & Now was laugh-out-loud, glorious fun. I couldn't stop smiling the entire performance. Despite initially wondering if I would remember the Steps songs I had enjoyed when I was a pre-teen, I found I knew every single one - and had to resist jumping out of my seat and dancing along (you get to do that at the end!)
If you ever need a mood boost, the Steps Musical is your answer. The cast were absolutely fabulous, and so talented - the songs were full of feeling, and the costumes were magical.
But one moment at the end had me stunned in my seat. Here & Now is produced by Steps themselves, ROYO and pop legend Pete Waterman, and Steps took to the stage at the end to sing along with the cast - as a special treat for the world premiere.
The audience all but lost the plot. It was a spectacular moment and we were all on our feet jumping and dancing along. It was a moment I'll never forget.
Want to know what the musical is about? Here & Now introduces seaside superstore Better Best Bargains, where it's Friday night, the vibe is right, and everyone's dancing in the aisles. But when leading lady Caz discovers the shelves are stocked with lies and betrayal, the summer of love she and her friends dreamed of suddenly feels like a tragedy. Have they all lost their chance of a 'happy ever after'? With Caz, Vel, Neeta and Robbie around, who knows what love has in store...
Directed by the award-winning Rachel Kavanaugh (Half a Sixpence, The Great British Bake Off Musical) and written by Shaun Kitchener (Hollyoaks), Here & Now features many of Steps iconic hits, including 5, 6, 7, 8, Better Best Forgotten, and Deeper Shade of Blue.
Here & Now The Steps Musical was wonderful, and I'd certainly like to see it again when it's back in Brum one day - it was definitely the Last Thing On My Mind last night...
