Fuel tanker on fire on Peka Peka expressway – 19 crews fighting the blaze

Fire trucks from multiple brigades were called to a fuel tanker on fire this morning on the Peka Peka Expressway just south of the Otaki River, on the Kapiti coast.
The first 111 call was received at 5.06am, and the cab of the tanker was well ablaze when the first crews arrived.
As at 6am there were 19 fire trucks, tankers and specialist vehicles at the fire or en route.
The tanker is in the north-bound lane.
The Peka Peka expressway was closed between Otaki and Waikanae.
A detour was in place on Old State Highway 1 but traffic was delayed by roadworks and traffic management.

The expressway remains closed to northbound traffic between Waikanae and Ōtaki.
The southbound closure has been shortened and applies near the scene of the fire. The expressway is now only closed to southbound traffic between the Ōtaki offramp and onramp (north and south of Ōtaki township).
Travel delays can be expected until this incident is resolved, and the route is fully open.
Drivers are asked to obey all instructions from emergency services and road crews, follow signposted detours, and to take care when travelling through the area.
UPDATE FROM NZTA at 10:35 am:
State Highway 1 is now open to southbound traffic at the site of this morning’s truck fire near Ōtaki.
The expressway remains closed to northbound traffic between Waikanae and Ōtaki, and drivers are asked to follow the detour route until this incident is resolved.
