Trials Studio RedLynx Looks Set to Close as Ubisoft Continues Major Restructure

Trials and tribulations

Publisher Ubisoft intends to shut down RedLynx, the Finnish development studio behind the beloved Trials series.

As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, Ubisoft released a statement in which it confirms its plans.

"Today, we informed our teams of a proposal to close RedLynx in Finland, subject to the local change negotiation process, which would affect up to 52 positions," the statement says.

The publisher also plans to cut 70 jobs at Ubisoft Singapore "to align the studio with upcoming production needs."

"We deeply value the contributions of both teams and recognize the impact this may have on our colleagues. We are committed to supporting our teams throughout this process and conducting it with care and respect."

RedLynx was founded in August 2000, and in its 26 years has mostly stuck to making Trials — its signature side-scrolling arcade franchise in which you ride a motorbike and pull off stunts to get through levels against the clock.

Ubisoft acquired the studio in 2011, and it continued to focus on Trials. The latest entry was Trials Rising in 2019.

As for Ubisoft Singapore, it's perhaps best known for leading development on the much maligned Skull and Bones, though it has contributed significantly to the Assassin's Creed series. Its latest effort was Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, released earlier this year.

Ubisoft has been undergoing an enormous reshuffle, reorganising its entire business with a view to cutting down costs and streamlining operations. This has unfortunately meant the closure of studios, layoffs, and project cancellations.

That’s rough, Trials is such a longtime series and it was super cool seeing the Flash games I was playing end up becoming a proper console series.
