Grapevine Fire activity keeps Beaver Dam State Park closed
by Tony Garcia / Las Vegas Review-Journal · Las Vegas Review-JournalBeaver Dam State Park in Caliente remains closed until further notice due to fire activity associated with the Grapevine Fire, which remains at zero containment Friday.
The closure is in place to protect public and firefighter safety, the Bureau of Land Management said in a release. Visitors are asked to respect all closure orders and avoid the area while firefighters continue suppression operations.
Caliente is about 140 miles northeast of Las Vegas.
The Grapevine Fire is estimated at 24,047 acres, and active fire behavior is expected to persist along the eastern portion of the fire due to high winds and low relative humidity, with these conditions forecast to continue through Saturday evening.
Firefighters continue to make steady progress securing containment features across the southern and western portions of the fire, the agency said.
The Kane Springs Fire is estimated at 17,042 acres and is now 50 percent contained. Firefighters made significant progress during the last operational period by completing containment line connections across all three divisions. Infrared mapping detected no new fire growth overnight, and crews continue working in heavier interior fuels to extinguish remaining hotspots and reduce residual heat.
Crews continue mopping up interior hotspots, securing and patrolling the fire perimeter, and strengthening containment lines where needed.
Weather and fire behavior
Critical fire weather is expected to develop over the fire area Friday through Saturday evening. This Red Flag Warning includes high winds, 25 mph sustained, gusts up to 40 mph in the afternoon, low relative humidity and high temperatures.
The increased wind may produce low visibility due to ash and dust in the air. Fire behavior is expected to increase during the critical burn period in the afternoon, fire growth is potential where fuels are available.
