Can’t get a ticket for the Bayeux Tapestry? One of London’s most hyped exhibitions opens at Tate Britain next month

by · Time Out London

In 1991, Edward Enninful became the youngest ever fashion director at i-D magazine; at 18 years old, Enninful was suddenly at the epicentre of Britain’s art and fashion scene and across the next decade he would witness and partake in its transformation first-hand. So, there are very few better placed to curate Tate Britain’s newest exhibition: The 90s: Art and Fashion

We’ve been looking forward to The 90s ever since it was first announced. Through photography, fashion, art and design, the show will explore how subculture, rebellion and anarchic experimentation grew across the decade. More than 100 pieces will be on show tracing the cultural and political landscape of the time, from the ongoing AIDS crisis and racial discrimination to free parties, the rise of drum and bass and the birth of acid house.

There’ll be iconic shots from photographers such as Juergen Teller and Nick Knight, legendary looks by the likes of Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen and Hussein Chalayan, as well as groundbreaking pieces by artists including Damien Hirst, Gillian Wearing, Tracey Emin and Yinka Shonibare.

Specific works you can expect to see include Steve McQueen’s first major film Bear (1993), Chris Ofili’s Turner Prize-winning tribute to Doreen and Stephen Lawrence ‘No Woman, No Cry’ (1998) and Sean Ellis’s epic battlefield portrait of Alexander McQueen ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ (1998) styled by Isabella Blow.

The 90s: Art and Fashion, curated by Edward Enninful, opens at Tate Britain on October 8 and will run until February 14 2027. Standard tickets cost £22, concession tickets cost £20 and Tate Collective tickets (for young people aged 16-25) are £5. Book here
