The Wire IT actor James Ransone’s cause of death has been revealed after he died at the age of 46 in late December.

The actor was best known for his portrayal of Ziggy Sobotka in The Wire, as well as Eddie Kaspbrak in the recent It: Chapter Two.

According to his death certificate, obtained by PEOPLE, the actor was confirmed to have died by suicide.

Just days after his death, James’ widow, Jamie McPhee, broke her silence and thanked him for “the greatest gifts” in their kids.

Taking to Instagram, Jamie wrote in a touching tribute to her late husband: “I told you I have loved you 1000 times before and I know I will love you again.”

“You told me…I need to be more like you and you need to be more like me – and you were so right. Thank you for giving me the greatest gifts – you, Jack and Violet. We are forever.”

The couple share two children, Jack, six, and daughter Violet, four, and Jamie frequently shares snaps on social media of the sweet pair.

The actor was open in recent years about his deep personal struggles, speaking candidly about addiction and recovery, revealing in a 2016 Interview Magazine profile that he got sober at age 27 after years of heroin use.

Following his death, his former costars paid tribute to him, including Channing Tatum and Natasha Lyonne.

Channing and James had worked together on the 2011 film, The Son of No One.

“I love you PJ I’ll see you on the next one my G,” he wrote in a sweet note to his friend.

In her tribute, Natasha, who recently worked with James on season 2 of Poker Face wrote: “Love you with everything I got and holding our beloved brilliant peejo with grace gratitude and cosmic peace into this life and the next — family forever ♾️ beautiful jamie you are the best of us we love you,” in a comment on Jamie’s Instagram tribute.
