Britney Spears arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence

Britney Spears has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

According to arrest records from the Ventura Sheriff’s Office, the Toxic hitmaker was stopped by law enforcement in California on Wednesday evening, March 4.

TMZ was the first to report the news, and a police source later told PEOPLE that Britney’s arrest was on suspicion of a DUI.

Britney was then released from police custody in the early hours of Thursday morning, March 5, under a “cite and release” process.

The popstar is due to appear in court for this incident on May 4 of this year.

Britney has yet to speak out about the matter.

The arrest comes after Britney seemingly deleted her Instagram account earlier this week.

The singer has had a turbulent few years, following her release from her 13-year conservatorship in 2021.

Just last month, it was reported that the ‘…Baby One More Time’ hitmaker had sold her entire music catalogue. It is not yet known how much she was paid for her discography.

In an emotional post shared on Instagram last month, Britney called out her family and admitted that she will “forgive but never forget”.

“For those of you in your family that have said to help you is to isolate you and make you feel unbelievably left out … they were wrong. We can forgive as people but u don’t ever forget,” she penned.

“Yearning and longing for contact is always crucial !!!” she exclaimed further.

At the time, Britney went on to admit that she believes she is “incredibly lucky to even be alive with how my family treated me once in my life and now I’m scared of them.”
