“Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty!” Delights and Surprises at Cinema Society Screening
by Charles Manning · Daily Front Row176
On Monday night the Cinema Society and Sony Pictures Classic hosted a screening of Josef Kubota Wladyka latest film, “Ha-Chan, Shake Your Booty” at the Crosby Street Hotel.
The film follows recent widow and amateur ballroom dance enthusiast Haru (played by Academy Award nominee Rinko Kikuchi) as she navigates grief and a potent crush on her new dance instructor played by Alberto Guerra. The film is equal parts tender and hysterical, swinging wildly from comedy to tragedy and back again, with slapstick and a dash of surrealism mixed in. It was a smash hit at Sundance earlier this year, winning the festival’s directing prize, and is absolutely worth checking out. And take your mother. She’ll love it.
Wladyka and Guerra were present at the screening, along with Sony Pictures Classics co-presidents Michael Barker and Tom Bernard and a slew of notable guests including Michelle Monaghan, Laila Robins, Prabal Gurung, Eunice Bae (Your Friends & Neighbors), Erin Robinson (Your Friends & Neighbors), Amita Rao (Adults), Dallas Roberts (Monster, Tulsa King), Dolly Wells (And Just Like That...), Scott Adsit (Veep, 30 Rock), Catherine Curtin (Stranger Things), Emma Myles (Orange is the New Black), Jenna Leigh Green, Montego Glover, Sarah Himadeh (The Last of Us), Orfeh, Christian Coulson (Mozart in the Jungle), Krista Morin (The Handmaid’s Tale), Graham Phillips (The Good Wife, Riverdale), Jake Silbermann (Broadway’s Death of a Salesman), Frederique Van Der Wal, Sante D’Orazio, Antoine Verglas, Hunter Kohl, Sophie Sumner, Alex Lundqvist, Sophie Flack Charles, Coco Mitchell, Celine Rattray, Michael James Scott (Broadway’s Aladdin), Emma O’Connor, Cameron Moir, Gabe Fazio (Maestro), Michael Bonini, Don Lee, Charles Manning, Eileen Matias, Jeff Ayars, The Sticks cast (Chloe Avakian, Emilie Bierre, Ethan Holder, Shai Chase), dancers Phil Chan, Lloyd Knight, Or Schraiber, Daniel Benedict, and Cinema Society founder Andrew Saffir.
