The Criterion Collection’s December Lineup Includes Nashville and Lubitsch on 4K, Grizzly Man & More

As America’s 250th year comes to a close, Criterion takes a look back at the nation’s 200th with a 4K upgrade of Robert Altman’s Nashville. The ’70s summery haze must really pop in Dolby Vision. So, too, should Ernst Lubitsch’s uber-precise framings and rhythms with The Shop Around the Corner entering the collection—not an upgrade, as I’d assumed, so totemic is one of the five-or-so best Christmas films ever. Given a boost, however, is Pietro Germi’s Divorce, Italian Style, which Criterion canonized in 2005.

Newer to the canon are Anthony Minghella’s The English Patient, which arrives on a 4K disc—get your Seinfeld screencaps and gifs ready—and Grizzly Man, one of the greatest documentaries Werner Herzog ever made (and one of the greatest anybody’s directed this century), which receives a Blu-ray. And I can only be happy about the ongoing revival of Eclipse, now in its 50th edition with Sara Gómez’s fourteen shorts and one feature.
