A Long Winter Trailer: Fred Hechinger and Ebon Moss-Bachrach Brave the Wilderness in Andrew Haigh’s Drama

by · The Film Stage

Andrew Haigh returned this fall with another tender drama, this time adapting a Colm Tóibín story with a cast including Fred Hechinger, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Caitríona Balfe, Kit Connor and D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai. A Long Winter, which recently played at New York Film Festival, will be coming to U.S. theaters on January 22, 2027 with select screenings in New York starting December 4.

Here’s the synopsis: “In 1951, high in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, Mike’s (Hechinger) world is thrown into uncertainty when his mother vanishes into the wilderness. Alongside his complicated father, and with their small mountain community rallying together against the unforgiving winter, Mike embarks on a search that leads him toward an unexpected journey of self-discovery, belonging and the quiet strength required to carry on.”

Kent M. Wilhelm said in his NYFF review, “In his second decade of feature filmmaking, Andrew Haigh has stealthily become one of cinema’s most emotionally perceptive voices. His characters never anticipate what’s coming their way, and he uses that element of surprise to test their mettle. Through internal struggle, he interrogates both our frailty and resilience through richly textured characters. Along with his thematic preoccupations (queerness, solitude, vulnerability), Haigh’s studies are reliable in their approach and quality. He has yet to make a bad movie; A Long Winter maintains the streak. While his adaptation of Colm Tóibín’s short story is sketched more broadly than previous work, it’s still a reflection of Haigh’s empathy, intelligence, and keen narrative instincts.”
