Xbox Layoffs Could Signal Wider Trouble Across Major Game Studios
by Matt Lawrence · OnMSFTThe latest Xbox layoffs have raised fresh concerns across the gaming industry, as reports suggest that the cuts may go beyond a few internal teams and affect several major publishers before the end of the month.
According to French journalist Sylvain Trinel, studios such as Arkane Lyon, Bethesda Game Studios, id Software, BioWare, Don’t Nod, Quantic Dream, and some PlayStation Studios could face layoffs, closures, or major internal changes as publishers try to reduce costs.
Xbox Studios Face Uncertain Future
Compulsion Games, Double Fine Productions, and Ninja Theory are reportedly at risk, although some teams are said to be exploring options such as going independent or finding a buyer.
Arkane Lyon has also become a major concern, especially after Arkane Austin was shut down following Redfall’s failure. The future of Marvel’s Blade has already faced questions, and licensed games often add extra pressure because they cost more to produce.
Bethesda Game Studios and id Software are more surprising names because both remain tied to major franchises like The Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and DOOM, but publishers can still cut smaller teams or cancel unannounced projects.
Wider Industry Pressure Builds
Outside Xbox, BioWare, Don’t Nod, and Quantic Dream are also facing pressure after weak sales, slow development cycles, and earlier layoffs.
PlayStation Studios may also see changes, although no specific studio has been confirmed. The wider concern is clear, as publishers are now cutting costs before the next fiscal period begins.
If these reports prove accurate, the gaming industry could face another painful wave of layoffs in the coming weeks.
