CBS takes down copyright notices over Stephen Colbert’s hosting a public access show
by Juliet La Sala · The Washington TimesCBS has removed copyright notices it issued over Stephen Colbert’s appearance on a Michigan public access show on Friday, 24 hours after he hosted the last episode of CBS’ “The Late Show,” news outlets report.
Online backlash preceded CBS’ rescinding of copyright claims over Mr. Colbert’s guest-host appearance on “Only in Monroe.” The show featured singer/guitarist/songwriter Jack White, actors Steve Buscemi and Jeff Daniels, and a cameo from rapper Eminem — all Michigan natives.
Mr. Colbert also spoke via FaceTime with comedian Byron Allen, who will be hosting “Comics Unleashed,” which is replacing Mr. Colbert’s canceled “The Late Show,” The Associated Press reported.
Mr. Colbert first guest-hosted “Only in Monroe” in 2015, just before replacing David Letterman as host on “The Late Show.”
He ended his 11-year run on “The Late Show” on Thursday.
CBS announced last summer that “The Late Show” would end, citing economic reasons. But Mr. Colbert’s show was the ratings leader in late-night TV, the AP reported. Many — including Mr. Colbert — expressed skepticism that President Trump’s repeated criticism of the show wasn’t a factor.
The decision to shutter the show came after parent company Paramount’s $16 million settlement of Mr. Trump’s lawsuit over a “60 Minutes” interview as Paramount awaited his administration’s approval of a pending sale to Skydance Media, the AP reported. Mr. Colbert had called it a “big fat bribe.”
During his “Late Show” finale, Mr. Colbert hinted at his appearance on “Only in Monroe,” telling his audience that Monroe public access was “probably where you’ll see me next.”
