El Paso’s Rock House Bar and Grill Closes Permanently After 14 Years
· NewsTalk 1290A Dive Bar That Meant Business for Rock and Metal in the Sun City
El Paso lost one of its most beloved live music venues this week. Rock House Bar and Grill, the dive bar and grill at 9828 Montana Ave. that had been a cornerstone of the city's rock and metal scene since 2011, announced it is permanently closing its doors.
The reason hits hard. According to an official statement from the venue, owner Matteo's declining health made it impossible to continue operations.
"Due to Matteo's health, he is no longer able to continue running Rockhouse," the statement reads. "This place meant so much to him, and this decision was not made lightly."
The closure leaves a real gap in El Paso's live music infrastructure, and anyone who ever walked into that room on a show night knows why.
What Made Rock House Different From Every Other Bar in El Paso
Rock House was not just a venue. Since 2011, the bar made a point of staying woven into the community, donating proceeds to charities, promoting local artists, and hosting multiple charity events each month.
The stage measured 30 by 28 feet, backed by in-house sound engineers running JBI professional audio equipment, which meant national touring acts showed up and actually sounded like themselves. That combination of a spacious stage, real production capability, and a dive bar soul is nearly impossible to replicate.
The venue held a capacity of 389, making it intimate enough for the crowd to feel every set but large enough to draw serious touring acts through El Paso's door.
Most shows ran Thursday through Saturday nights, though Rock House was capable of hosting up to seven nights a week, and national acts were often opened to all ages.
The Bands That Played This El Paso Stage
The list of acts that came through Rock House over the years reads like a metal and rock wish list. The venue hosted artists including Crowbar, Eyehategod, D.R.I., Obscura, Exhorder, and Inhuman Condition. Rivers of Nihil, Rotting Christ, Hypocrisy, Brujeria, Malevolent Creation, and Bewitcher all took that stage as well. Lords of Acid, Real Friends, and Attila were among the acts that drew strong crowd reactions from El Paso fans.
These were not local-only bookings. Rock House was pulling legitimate national and international acts to a dive bar on Montana Avenue, and El Paso's rock community showed up every time.
The El Pasoans Who Kept the Lights On
The closure statement gave particular thanks to two people who held the venue together through hard stretches.
"We want to give a truly special thank you to Marlene and Bunny for holding Rockhouse together these past years," the statement reads. "Through every challenge, you showed up with heart, strength, and love for this place and the people in it. You kept the spirit alive."
The staff, past and present, were also honored in the announcement, credited as "the heartbeat" of what made Rock House more than just a bar.
What Happens to the Shows?
All upcoming shows at Rock House have been canceled. The venue is directing fans to watch for announcements from individual promoters about whether events will be moved to other locations.
Anyone holding hard copy tickets can seek reimbursement on Monday between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. Online ticket purchases will be refunded automatically.
El Paso Loses a Room That Cannot Be Easily Replaced
For touring rock and metal bands, El Paso just got harder to route. Rock House was the kind of room that made a city worth stopping in, not because of flashy amenities, but because of the energy inside those walls, the sound that filled them, and the community that packed them show after show for 14 years.
The statement from the venue closed with an invitation that now serves as a small piece of comfort.
"Please share your favorite memories and photos with us below. Let's celebrate everything Rockhouse was and always will be in our hearts."
Sending prayers and blessings to Matteo and his family.
