Finally, after all these years, the Food and Drug Administration has ruled that maybe we should cut off an ingredient that is overwhelmingly present in just about everything from food to medicine.

That is correct, this ingredient with decades of research suggesting it was a minimum toxic and at its worst deadly, is actually found in several medications like over the counter cold remedies. Erythrosine, aka red dye number 3, is extremely common in pink colored foods, but even with Valentine's Day now less than a month away, do not expect any major shake ups to our store shelves before the holiday.

According to this Associated Press News article, the new FDA ruling is allowing for food manufacturers to delay phasing out red dye 3 from our foods for another two years, and its presence in drug products can remain until 2028.

Really do not know if this will lead to more families seeking out food and snack options that only contain natural flavors and coloring, but I certainly hope we do not end up with some type of artificial cousin that we will wait another 35 years to decide it isn't good for us either.
