This Huge Texas State Park Is Getting Even Bigger

· NewsTalk 1290

Texas is loaded with state parks and one of the most popular ones in the lone star state is about to get quite a bit bigger.

This particular park rocks ... literally and figuratively ... and is about to grow from its current 1,644 acres by another 630 acres according to the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife.

Pretty big but it's not the biggest state park in Texas.

Enchanted Rock Natural Preserve is a nice daytrip from Austin, straddling Gillespie and Llano counties, less than 20 miles from Fredericksburg. The main attraction here is "The Rock".

Not the wrestler turned actor, the actual, (and huge), Enchanted Rock. A monstrous chunk of pink granite that rises 425 feet above the park and offers an amazing view. One of the parks many hiking trails takes you to the top of "the rock".

The Nature Conservancy bought most of the original Enchanted Rock site from a private landowner named Charles Moss in 1978, and it was transferred to TPWD six years later. Enchanted Rock saw more than 300,000 visitors in 2023, placing it squarely among the top 10 most popular state parks in Texas. - chron

TPWD noted in a Facebook post that it did not know when the land would become accessible to the public, but told the Fredericksburg Standard Radio-Post in a statement that the additional land could "help ensure the view of the Hill Country from the top of the rock remains beautiful and expansive and provides an opportunity to help enhance the visitor experience." - chron

Entry is $8 per person, (13 and older) and reservations are required on weekends and certain other days. Some trails may be closed for various reasons including wet weather. Learn more here or via the parks Facebook page.
