Defqon.1 visitors offered refunds or guaranteed 2027 tickets after Code Red cancellation

Event organizer Q-dance has released the official compensation and refund terms for visitors of the festival Defqon.1 in Biddinghuizen after the unexpected cancellation due to an extreme heat Code Red weather warning last week.

Main ticket buyers who purchased their entrance tickets through the official Q-dance shop will be given two choices. Transfer the current 2026 admission ticket to secure a guaranteed ticket for Defqon.1 2027, or receive a complete financial refund for the face value of the festival entrance tickets. Refund processing is scheduled to begin in mid-August, with the organizer aiming to have all financial returns finalized by the end of August.

Defqon.1 2026 was officially cancelled for the remainder of the weekend during the evening hours on Thursday, June 25 into Friday. The cancellation announcement was pushed out to attendees at approximately 12:24 a.m. on Friday.

The festival had actually already kicked off. Campers arrived on the Holy Grounds, and the opening night event (The Gathering) took place. Shortly after this, the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) officially upgraded the weather warning to a historic, 24-hour Code Red for extreme heat, the first time a Code Red for heat had ever been issued in the history of the Netherlands

Rioting and vandalism erupted after the announcement. Frustrated and angry over the sudden shutdown, a group of attendees caused significant unrest, forcing police and security services to deploy massive force to regain control.

Heavily circulated social media videos showed furious crowds systematically destroying parts of the festival infrastructure. Attendees tore down security fences and smashed the main festival entrance gates.

Due to climbing temperatures, Q-dance initially attempted to downsize. They announced that Friday and Saturday day-ticket holders would not be allowed in, hoping to save the event for weekend and Sunday campers.

Unlike entry tickets, auxiliary purchases cannot be rolled over to the 2027 edition. The accommodation bookings, travel & stay packages, parking tickets, locker rentals, and other eligible festival add-ons purchased via the official Q-dance shop will be refunded automatically without requiring action from the buyer.

The main buyer of the order will receive an email containing a personalized link to submit their choice between a refund and a 2027 ticket. No action is required until this email arrives. Q-dance intends to offer booking priority for the Defqon.1 2027 ticket sale to visitors who had accommodations included in their cancelled 2026 orders, though final details on this are still being ironed out.
