Seattle and Western WA celebrate ‘9 to 5’ Dolly Parton Day

Don all the pink and rhinestones you’ve got. It’s Dolly Parton Day.

It’s been a month since the death of the much adored country singer, philanthropist and actor Dolly Parton, who died of cancer at age 80. Now, communities across the world, including Seattle, are celebrating Dolly Day on Sept. 25 — or 9/25 — in a clever nod to her hit song “9 to 5.” 

Seattle City Councilmember Alexis Mercedes Rinck proclaimed Friday as Dolly Day in Emerald City at a Parton-themed story hour on Tuesday at the Queen Anne Branch of the Seattle Public Library in partnership with Parton’s Imagination Library, just as King County Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda led a similar proclamation for the county. 

Here are some ways you can celebrate the cultural icon of Dolly Parton in Seattle and beyond:

Silent disco and movie night at Denny Park: Seattle Parks and Recreation is hosting a Dolly-inspired silent disco from 4 to 6 p.m. before screening “9 to 5” at 6:30 p.m.

Free Dolly Party at Des Moines theater: Gather at the Des Moines Theater for a free Dolly Parton party starting at 6 p.m. with a plethora of ways to celebrate, including Dolly-inspired music, movies, food, drinks and glittery, glam-y, get-ups. 

Dolly Day all over Edmonds: Edmonds is going all out with tons of events, including music, special Dolly drinks at various bars and cafes and a wine tasting at Ace Hardware. You can also attend a drag show at Fox and Bottle from 7 to 9 p.m. for a $20 minimum donation to the Edmonds School District. 

Plenty of celebrations in Puyallup: Puyallup is pulling out the stops. Head over to Firemind Brewing for Dolly trivia and the Page and Pine Bookshop for Dolly events and more.

Free lawn bowling at Jefferson Park in South Seattle: Join the Jefferson Park lawn bowling club for free lawn bowling from 5 to 9 p.m. Pink attire is appreciated but not required. 

Sing along and chili in Ballard: Mike’s Chili Parlor is hosting a Dolly Parton sing along night, featuring Spank Williams and Country Mike from “6 p.m. to whenever.”

Raise a cup of ambition at any McMenamins: The bar and restaurant chain is serving up two special Dolly Parton drinks — the “Backwoods Barbie” and “Cup of Ambition” — and will be donating $2 from every special drink sold to the Imagination Library.

Grab a Dolly Slushie at Wild Rose: The Capitol Hill lesbian bar is serving Dolly themed slushies and “iconic Dolly mashups” during DJ Ricki Leigh’s DJ set at 9 p.m. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Imagination Library.
