Is Reading Books an Unproductive Experience in 2026? My Reading Habits Actually Lead to Real Self-Growth, Compassion and Happiness
Jessica K. Bone, Feifei Bu, Jill Sonke and Daisy Fancourt, researchers at University College London and the University of Florida, analyzed 236,270 responses to the American Time Use Survey and found that the share of Americans who read for pleasure on an average day fell by more than 40% between 2003 and 2023, a steady drop of about 3% a year. In the University of Florida’s summary of the study, Sonke says reading supports empathy, social bonding and emotional development as well as literacy, and the researchers point to digital media, economic pressure and shrinking leisure time as possible reasons for the drop. The study itself didn’t test causes. In other words, books may be doing real work on our self-growth, compassion, discipline and happiness, and fewer of us are giving them the chance. With the evenings getting dark early and the holidays close, I went back to reading books, and a few things changed in ways I didn’t really think about.
