More than 1,400 firefighters were on the ground, with hundreds more on the way, California Governor Gavin Newsom said.

A ferocious wildfire in a Los Angeles suburb, home to many Hollywood celebrities, devoured buildings and sparked panicked evacuations Tuesday, as hurricane-force winds tore through the region.

Nearly 30,000 residents in Los Angeles' Pacific Palisades, an upscale locality, were evacuated as a massive wildfire destroyed acres and homes.

People were seen leaving their cars to flee on foot, forcing authorities to remove the vehicles with bulldozers to allow hundreds of firefighters to attempt to contain the blaze.
