Critics Choices open awards season
LOS ANGELES - “One Battle After Another,” a subversive comedy about radical politics, was named best picture at the 31st annual Critics Choice Awards on Sunday. The film won two other top prizes; best director and best adapted screenplay for Paul Thomas Anderson. “Frankenstein,” Guillermo del Toro’s sumptuous re-telling of the horror classic, and “Sinners,” a vampire film set in the Jim Crow South, tied with a leading four awards. “Frankenstein’s” prizes included best supporting actor for Jacobi Elordi’s turn as the Creature, as well as for its production design, hair and makeup and costumes. “Sinners” was recognized for its original screenplay, its casting and its score. Miles Caton, the film’s 20-year-old star, was named best young actor. “Adolescence,” the story of a murder investigation told in a single shot, also earned four awards, including the statue for best limited series.
