Over 22,000 local, foreign tourists visit Ayeyawady beaches during New Year holiday
by EMG · Eleven Media Group Co., LtdDuring the New Year holiday of 2026, more than 22,000 local and foreign tourists visited Ayeyawady Region’s seaside resorts, including Ngwe Saung, Chaungtha, Shwe Thaung Yan and Gawyangyi beaches, according to sources.
During the New Year holiday from January 1 to 4, a total of more than 22,000 travellers visited popular destinations in Ayeyawady Region. Ngwe Saung Beach attracted over 12,000 local tourists and 390 foreign visitors, while Chaungtha Beach received more than 9,400 local tourists and 37 foreign tourists. Shwe Thaung Yan Beach was visited by over 500 local tourists and 19 foreign travellers, and Gawyangyi Island welcomed 32 local visitors.
In 2025, over 1.5 million local tourists and 18,956 foreign tourists visited Ayeyawady Region, for a total of more than 1.5 million local and foreign tourists. There are 38 hotels and 70 guesthouses in Ngwe Saung Beach, 32 hotels and 55 guesthouses in Chaungtha Beach, six hotels and three guesthouses on Shwe Thaung Yan Beach, and 49 hotels and 315 guesthouses in Pathein and other areas to accommodate local and foreign tourists.
During the long New Year holiday, foreign tourists from 13 countries visited beach resorts in Ayeyawady Region, with the largest number of tourists coming from China, Russia, India and Thailand, according to sources.
