Kavem Hodge has scored an unbeaten century to help West Indies keep the Black Caps at bay in the third cricket test at Mount Maunganui.

The tourists were 381/6 at stumps at the end of the third day's play, leaving them 194 behind the New Zealand's first innings total of 575/8 declared.

Hodge saluted to the sky, after bringing up his ton - his second test century - from 227 balls. He had a nasty moment on 97, when he was hit on the groin from a Michael Rae delivery, but recovered, albeit gingerly, and was not out on 109 at stumps.

The West Indies also avoided any question they might have to follow on, when they closed within 200 runs of the New Zealand total just before stumps.

A highlight for the Black Caps saw left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel claiming his first test wicket in New Zealand. He had previously taken 85 scalps overseas, but is rarely selected at home, because of the pace-friendly wickets.

He had two wickets by stumps, sharing the day's bowling honours with Jacob Duffy.

The Black Caps lead the series 1-0, after winning the second test in Wellington. The first test in Christchurch ended in a draw.
