Strict border surveillance rules extended again in Latvia

The enhanced control regime has been established in Ludza and the parishes of Ludza municipality, Krāslava and the parishes of Krāslava municipality, Augšdaugava municipality, Daugavpils, and the Kaunata parish of Rēzekne municipality.
The decision to extend the enhanced control regime until June 30th of next year was made in view of the disproportionately high number of cases of illegal border crossings and attempts to cross the Latvian-Belarusian border.
The Ministry of the Interior indicated that in July 2025, 2,049 persons were prevented from illegally crossing the state border, in August – 1,222 persons, in September – 1,023 persons, 975 cases in October, and 618 cases in November (statistics as of November 27th).
The ministry emphasised that the pressure of illegal immigration remains unchanged and high.
Last year, 5,388 people were prevented from illegally crossing the Latvian-Belarusian border, but 26 people were admitted to the country on humanitarian grounds.
