An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.0 struck Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, December 27, 2024. The tremors were felt in Srinagar and surrounding areas at around 9:06 pm.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed the earthquake in a post on X, saying, “EQ of M: 4.0, On: 27/12/2024 21:06:59 IST, Lat: 34.26 N, Long: 74.44 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Baramulla, Jammu & Kashmir.” The epicentre was located at a latitude of 34.26° N and longitude 74.44° E, with a depth of 10 km.
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
This earthquake came a day after a 2.6 magnitude quake hit Haryana's Sonipat on December 26. Last month, Jammu and Kashmir also experienced a stronger earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8. That quake had its epicentre in Afghanistan, at a depth of 165 km.
