Sema: Inside the sacred whirling ritual of Turkey's dervishes

Sema is a sacred ritual performed by Turkey’s whirling dervishes of the Mevlevi Sufi order, founded nearly 800 years ago by followers of the mystic poet Jalaluddin Rumi. More than a dance, it is a form of active meditation and prayer, symbolising the soul’s journey from ego to divine love. Though often seen today in public spaces, for dervishes, Sema remains an unchanged act of remembrance, surrender, and devotion.
