Bhubaneswar: Kali Puja, dedicated to Goddess Kali, will be celebrated on Sunday,, November 8, across Odisha and several other parts of the country.
Also known as Shyama Puja, the festival is observed on the Amavasya, or new moon night, of the Hindu month of Kartik and coincides with Diwali.
Goddess Kali is worshipped as a symbol of strength, protection and the destruction of evil. Devotees believe that worshipping the goddess brings protection from negative forces and helps overcome fear and difficulties.

Unlike regions where Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped during Diwali, Kali Puja holds special significance in Odisha, West Bengal and Assam. The main rituals are traditionally performed at night, particularly around midnight, with devotees visiting temples and decorated pandals to offer prayers.
Homes and pandals are illuminated with lamps and decorative lights, while special offerings and religious rituals form an important part of the celebrations. In several communities, the occasion is also marked by cultural programmes and gatherings.
As preparations continue, devotees are looking forward to celebrating the festival with devotion and enthusiasm.
