New Delhi, Dec 22: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Monday asked lawyers to approach the Supreme Court Registry for urgent hearings, stating that the Registry would scrutinise the reasons and list cases accordingly.

The CJI made the observations while presiding over a special vacation bench along with Justice Joymalya Bagchi to hear matters requiring immediate judicial intervention. As the bench assembled, several lawyers began mentioning cases for urgent listing.

“Instead of mentioning, furnish reasons to the Registry. The reasons will be scrutinised and, if found urgent, the matter will be tentatively listed either on December 26 or December 29,” the CJI said.

The special sitting was held to ensure timely consideration of pressing cases during the court’s vacation period, the bench observed. Earlier, on Friday, CJI Kant had indicated his willingness to sit on December 22—the first day of the Supreme Court’s Christmas and New Year holidays—to hear urgent matters. (Agencies)
