Stretched SO-6 package for ~1kV isolated gate driver

by · Electronics Weekly.com

Vishay has stretched an SO-6 package to accommodate 1kV operation from opto-based mosfet and IGBT gate drivers.

The body is ~7mm from end to end and creepage is 8mm.

Clearance is 7mm for the ‘option 9’ package which has conventionally bent legs, or 8mm for the ‘option 8’ package which has widely-splayed legs (see image).

Peak working voltage is 1.14kV for the wide-spayed part (DIN EN 60747-5-5), or 891Vpeak for the less-splayed ‘option 9’ versions.

Noise immunity is 50kV/µs.

Inside, the isolated drivers have an AlGaAs LED on the input and photo-diode plus an amplifier output – secondary side power is required at 15 to 30V (3mA max).

Rising and falling edge propagation delays are the same, at between 50 and 200ns. Rise and fall times are typically 35ns, and pulse with distortion is typically 10ns but up to 70ns,

There are two versions (each available in both leg bends)

  • VOFD341A that drives at 2.5 to 3A
  • VOFD343A that drives at 3 to 4A

Operation for both is across -40 to +125°C.

“The optocouplers are intended for solar inverters and microinverters, ac and brushless dc industrial motor control inverters, and inverter stages for ac-dc conversion in in uninterruptable power supplies,” according to the company. “The devices are ideally suited for directly driving IGBTs with ratings up to 1,200V 100A.”
