Poor sanitation around the temporary toilets set up near the Thayar Sannadhi entrance at Srirangam temple has caused resentment among devotees and residents.
Wastewater from three toilets often overflows and stagnates along the North and East Uthirai Streets, complain residents. The problem is exacerbated due to the fact that there are no underground sewage systems in the immediate vicinity of the Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple.
The stagnating wastewater emits a stench making it an unpleasant visit for devotees and residents who have to pass through the street to enter the Thayar Sannadhi. This has been situation for the past six months for close to 200 families living in the area.
With ‘Vaikunta Ekadasi‘ celebrations set to begin next week, the problem is expected to get worse with the visit of thousands of devotees.
“The temple attracts a huge number of devotees as well as foreign tourists. Lack of initiative from the Corporation to maintain the cleanliness around the temple is disappointing,” said Suresh Venkatachalam, President, Srirangam Nagara Nalasangam.
A senior Corporation official told The Hindu that the situation would be rectified at the earliest.
