An interventional procedure was successfully done on a premature baby with low birth weight at Lisie Hospital here.

The baby, born to parents from Kanjani in Thrissur, was referred from a local hospital with antenatally diagnosed heart disease. She had a birth weight of 935 grams, according to a release issued by the hospital on Tuesday.

The baby was taken up for PDA (Patent Ductus Arteriosus) stenting (a procedure that treats infants and children with congenital heart disease and duct-dependent pulmonary circulation) in view of the worsening condition.

A coronary stent was deployed across the PDA. The baby‘s saturation improved and prostaglandin could be stopped. The baby was removed from the ventilator the next day and feeding was initiated. The procedure, which was led by Dr. Anil S.R, head of the department of paediatric cardiology, was done under the ‘Hridyam’ scheme of the Kerala government, it said.
