Four hours of “holiday congestion” on SH1 between Otaki and Levin

NZTA this afternoon reported congestion for northbound traaffic on SH1 between Ōtaki and Levin.

At midday, northbound drivers faced delays of between 15 and 30 minutes while traveling through this area.

At 1.45 the delays had worsened. NZTA advised:

Due to holiday congestion, expect delays of up to 45 minutes when travelling northbound on SH1 between Ōtaki and Levin. Consider delaying your journey.

The delays continued for hours, and congestion was easing at 4.25.

NZTA also reported bad visibility between Linden and Paekakariki in Transmission Gully.

At 6am it said motorists in Transmission Gully should “switch your headlights on, increase your following distance, be prepared for unexpected hazards,”

There was no further information for nine hours. At 3pm, this message: The poor weather has now cleared on SH1 Transmission Gully between Linden and Paekakariki.
