· SCOOP

News from WCC
Massey Road between Shelly Bay and Scorching Bay, at the northern end of Te Motu Kairangi Miramar Peninsula, is to close from early June till October so three sections of seawall (220 metres in total) can be repaired to maintain the support of the road above.

The locations of the seawall repair sites are:

Mahanga Bay
Two in Kau Bay, about 200 metres south of the Point Halswell lighthouse.

This work involves the demolition and removal of the existing walls, earthworks, installation of a new concrete mass block wall, road reinstatement, installation of a new safety barrier, drainage improvements and reinstatement of habitats.

Working hours will be Monday to Saturday from 6am – 6pm, and Sundays as required.

The road closure begins at Point Halswell and ends at Herbies Beach (pullover area), north of Scorching Bay.

Cyclists and pedestrians can continue to use the road both ways throughout the construction period, with traffic control in place.

The road closure allows for scheduled works at both sites to be completed over one 5-month period, bringing forward the completion date to October 2026 and reducing traffic management costs by an estimated 50%.

To access the eastern bays, traffic will be redirected through Miramar and over to Karaka Bay via Awa Road. Alternatively motorists can access these areas through Seatoun tunnel or from Breaker Bay.
